x Naval General Service 1793-1840, two clasps, St. Domingo, Victorious With Rivoli (William Clodd.), good very fine Estimate £ 3,800-4,200 William Clodd served as Ship´´s Corporal in H.M.S. Spencer for the capture of three and destruction of two French ships-of-the-line by Vice Admiral Sir John Duckworth´´s squadron of St. Domingo, Dominica, 6.2.1806. There were two Large Naval Gold Medals and Seven Small Naval Gold Medals awarded for St. Domingo. Clodd served as Quarter Master in H.M.S. Victorious for action inconjunction with H.M.S. Weazel against a French squadron off the Istrian Coast of Croatia in the Adriatic, which included the capture of the 74-gun Rivoli and the destruction of the brig Mercure, 22.2.1812. The Captain of H.M.S. Victorious, John Talbot, received a Small Naval Gold Medal for this action. William Clodd, born King´´s Lynn, Norfolk, 1780; joined the Royal Navy as Able Seaman, 1798; he initially served in H.M.S. Renomme before seeing four years service in H.M.S. Excellent; served with H.M.S. Spencer from August 1803 and was advanced to Quarter Gunner, September 1805, and Quarter Master´´s Mate the following month; his rapid advancement continued next year when he was made Quarter Master; transferred in same rating to H.M.S. Victorious, January 1809; discharged from service 1814 and later became an "In Pensioner" at Greenwich Hospital, whose records as well as Victorious´´s Muster roll give him as injuring his back whilst in action with the Rivoli; he received a pension of £16 per annum; priorto his time at Greenwich Hospital he had resided at John Street, Commercial Road, London.
