x Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, St. Sebastian (Henry Hackman, Clerk.), minor edge nicks, therefore very fine Estimate £ 1,100-1,300 Henry Hackman served as Clerk in H.M.S. Dispatch, which assisted in the capture of St. Sebastian when some ship´´s boats were employed in the inner blockade, 8.9.1813. Henry Hackman, born Godalming, Surrey; joined the Royal Navy as a volunteer, April 1812, and was rated as Landsman; over the course of the next three years his service included in H.M.S.´´s Curlew, Childers (where he was promoted to Clerk), Monmouth, Royalist, Dispatch, Narcissus and Penelope; the latter was a troopship which was wrecked, whilst Hackman was borne on her books, off Newfoundland, 1.5.1815; the surviving crew returned to England, 22.7.1815, and the commanding officer was court martialed; it appears that this was when Hackman left the Navy.
