x Naval General Service 1793-1840, one clasp, 2 May Boat Service 1813 (James Clare.), minor edge nicks, otherwise good very fine Estimate £ 700-900 James Clare served as Ordinary Seaman in H.M.S. Repulse, two other men of this name appear on the Admiralty Claimants List which includes one single clasp award for Syria; Clare served in the boats of the Repulse, when on 2.5.1813 the marines from the Repulse, Volontaire and Undaunted under Captain M. Ennis R.M., were landed and destroyed some newly erected works in the vacinity of Morgiou, near Toulon. The boats from the same ships, under the orders of Lieutenant I. Shaw of the Volontaire, covered by the launches and by H.M.S. Redwing, brought out six laden merchant vessels. Approximately 48 clasps claimed for this action. James Clare, born Kilkenny, Ireland; joined the Royal Navy as Boy Second Class, 1808; posted to H.M.S. Alcmene the same year, and served in her until she was wrecked at sea off Nantes, 29.4.1809; he was borne on the ship´´s books of H.M.S. Repulse as Landsman, from January 1810; later service included with H.M.S. President; he received his N.G.S. whilst as an "In Pensioner" at Greenwich Hospital, the latter records that he served in the Royal Navy for 23 years and in the Merchant Service for 13 years prior to his entry in the Greenwich Hospital, 12.7.1845; he died whilst residing in the hospital, 31.7.1860.
