St. Helena 1820 (20 Oct.) entire letter from Paisley "To Quarter Master James Rayside H.M. 66th. Regt. Island St. Helena Africa", rated "1/11 1/2" and showing Paisley mileage h.s., London d.s. (26.10) and superb "post paid ship lr/london" double oval d.s. (S.45), both (26.10) in red, Glasgow transit c.d.s. (23.10) on reverse. A fine accompanying cover to the previous lot. Photo Estimate £ 600-700 Note: On 12th. July 1819 the East India Packet and Ship Letter Act of 1815 was repealed. Packet Boat services between the United Kingdom and the Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius and the East Indies, including St. Helena, ceased. Mail was now sent by private ship. G.P.O. Instructions No. 17 and Special Instruction, both of July1 1819, advised Postmasters that a) Soldiers Letters could not be carried for a Penny in Ship Letter Bags and b) Letters to and from soldiers in the East Indies must be paid for at the same rate as private individuals provenance: "Jamestown" John Ayre Collection, 1989
