St. Helena 1818 (23 Mar.) entire letter from Scotland "To Quarter master Sergeant J. Rayside 66th. Regt. St. Helena", marked "P1" and showing light Paisley mileage h.s., London Paid d.s. (27.3) in red and Crowned "india packet letter/london" d.s. (In. P4) for the same date. A rare item of incoming mail to a soldier on guard duty during the internment of Napoleon. Photo Estimate £ 600-700 Note: On 11th July 1815, the East India Packet & Ship Letter Act was passed by Parliament. By this a Packet Mail was established to the Cape of Good Hope, Mauritius and the East Indies. This entitled soldiers serving in St. Helena to receive and send pre-paid single letters under the usual restrictions for 1d.
