St. Helena 1818 (5 Jan.) entire letter "From John Wheeler Bombadier Royal Regt. of Artillery" to England, marked "Paid 1d", countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing a fine strike of the unframed "st. helena/packet-letter" oval d.s., "paid/india/packet letter" oval-framed d.s. (In. P1) and London Paid c.d.s. (both 23.2) in red, all on face, a further London c.d.s. (23.2) on reverse. The earliest recorded soldiers letter from St. Helena. Photo Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 Note: The Hon. East India Company had control of St. Helena between 1673 and 1834. After Napoleon Bonaparte´´s personal surrender on 15th. July 1815, the Company´´s Court of Directors advised the island´´s Council that they had agreed to St. Helena becoming Napoloeon´´s place of internment and during his exile there, the British Government would take over the administration of the territory. Napoloen left England on 8th. August, landing at St. Helena on 17th. October
