Natal 1861 (9 June) envelope "From Corpl. Alr. Ross, 85th. Regiment" at Pietermaritzburg to Scotland with fancy printed "from pietermaritzburg" at upper left corner, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1860 1d. rose-red cancelled "1" in oval of bars and showing despatch c.d.s. and manuscript "2" charge mark at centre; the envelope torn, soiled and with other faults though the only known soldier´s cover bearing the first Chalon 1d. value.
