Natal 1860 (Mar.) envelope "From No. 26 Lce. Corpl. Aler Ross 85th. Regt." at Fort Napier to Scotland with fancy "from pietermaritzburg" in green at upper left corner, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1859 embossed 1d. blue clearly cancelled and tied by "post office/p.m. burg" oval-framed h.s. and showing "2d" charge h.s. at centre, the reverse with London (25.5) and Glasgow (25.5) c.d.s.; the envelope with some soiling and other faults, nevertheless an exceptionally rare franking of the soldier´s 1d. concessionary rate. B.P.A. Certificate (1992). Photo Estimate £ 6,000-7,000 Note: Natal was created an independent British Colony in 1856, the same year that H.M. 85th. King´´s Light Infantry landed in South Africa. Lance Corporal Ross was entitled to the 1d. soldier´´s letter rate, however as he used the 1d. Natal stamp, the 1d. raised was not remitted to the British Post Office but retained by Natal to pay the inland postage, hence the 2d. charge on delivery for an unpaid soldier´´s letter
