Mauritius 1860 (8 Feb.) envelope "From No. 709 Prit. J. Clark No. 5 Coy. 2B 5th. Fusiliers" to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1859 (Dec.) Dardenne 1d. dull vermilion with margins mainly all round and neatly cancelled with void oval of bars, the reverse with G.P.O. Mauritius and London S.E. (12.3) c.d.s.; the envelope a little soiled and with other small faults. A highly important classic issue franking and the only recorded use of a Dardenne 1d. value on a soldier´s cover. B.P.A. Certificate (1979). Photo Estimate £ 18,000-20,000 Note: The 2nd. Battalion H.M. 5th. Regiment landed at Mauritius in November 1858 and remained for four years. The cover was despatched on the P&O steamer "Columbian" which left Mauritius on 8th. February for Suez. It went overland to Alexandria from where it was taken by the P&O steamer "Pera" to Southampton
