Mauritius 1857 (7 Mar.) entire letter "From No. 2565 Sergt. J. Wood 5th. Fusiliers Mauritius" to New Jersey, U.S.A., countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing, on reverse, oval-framed "packet letter/mauritius" d.s., London (2.5) and Boston British Packet (21.5) c.d.s., the face panel with "2" charge h.s deleted and replaced with manuscript "4", manuscript "Missent to" in front of Paterson, N.J. c.d.s. and "9" (cents) charge mark; the entire with some age stains, soiling and other faults though an interesting Missent cover to an unusual destination. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: H.M. 5th. Fusiliers served at Mauritius between 1846-57. The "2" charge mark indicated that 2d. unpaid soldiers postage was due and the cover was dispatched to USA without any additional British further charge. Soldier´´s letters to USA were subject to US 5 cents Inland Postage. At Boston the 2d. unpaid British postage, converted to 4c., was added to make 9 cents, applied with the use of a "9" for 6 cents applied upside down
