India 1855 (23 Nov.) entire "From Bombr S Horrocks No 1253 3/1 Aty" at Belgaum to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1854 1a. red Die II pair each neatly cancelled and tied by diamond of dots, showing oval-framed "india", manuscript "1d" (deleted) replaced with "2", the reverse showing Belgaum, Bombay (28.11), London 5.1) and indistinct arrival (6.1) d.s.; a most unusual cover sent bearing Indian stamps at a time when pre-payment with postage stamps was unacceptable. Photo Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note: From 10 August 1855 it became optional for a soldier to send mail from India to the U.K. either bearing postage or prepaid in cash only with 1d. or nine pies. The London postal clerk has first accepted the fact that this letter had been prepaid for the soldier´´s letter privilege postage. He then realised this could only be prepaid by cash and not stamps, and deleted his manuscript "1d.". The recipient has therefore been charged the unpaid soldier´´s letter rate by Packet of 2d.
