India 1855 (10 June) "Soldiers Letter From Genl. no. 2046 La Corpl. J. Ryan , No. 2 Co. 2nd. Regt. B.E.L.I." at Camp Hyderabad to Connecticut, U.S.A., countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing "hydrabad/paid" double-arc d.s. (HG4), oval framed "india", "2" charge h.s. (deleted), manuscript "4", and U.S. "9" and "10" h.s., the reverse with Bombay (date unclear), London (17.8) and Boston Packet (30.8) c.d.s.; some faults at folds, etc. though an unusual incorrectly rated item to the U.S. Estimate £ 200-250 Note: G.P.O. Instruction No. 11 of March 1849 notified the public that letters to soldiers in the East India Company´´s service addressed to the U.S.A. would in future be charged with a U.S. 5c. Inland Postage in addition to the British concessionary rate of 1d. The letter was sent by a British Packet to England. A further British Packet carried the letter to Boston where the "2" charge was deleted and converted to "4" cents. Added to the U.S. 5c. inland postage, 9 cents became due indicated by an upside-down "6" as no U.S. "9" cents h.s. existed. A clerk incorrectly added the "6" to "4" to make 10cents due
