Lot: 211

India 1855 (17 Apr.) entire "From Bomr T. Walker No. 1468 2/2 Artillery" at Ahmednuggur to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1854 1a. red Die I neatly cancelled and tied by diamond of bars, showing Ahmednuggur Paid d.s. alongside and oval-framed "india" over-cancelled with "2" charge h.s., the reverse with Bombay (18.4), London (5.6) and Spalding 5.6) c.d.s.. Exceptionally rare, being one of only two soldier´s letters recorded with first issue Indian stamps. Photo Estimate £ 3,000-4,000 Note: The confusion created by the Indian Post Office Act XVII on 1 October and its correction on 8 November 1854 continued. The postage charged during this short-lived six week period was paid for with Indian lithographed stamps. Bombardier Walker has attempted to pre-pay his soldiers rate with a 1a. stamp. The actual rate to the U.K. was 8pies, but stamps of that denomination were not available until 1860. As pre-payment at this date was not permitted, the letter was carried to the U.K. as an unpaid soldiers letter by British Packet and recipient charged 2d.
