India The Second Sikh War, 1848-49 1849 (26 Feb.) entire letter "From No 1528 Corpl. Cuth. Jackson, H.M. 61st. Regt." at Camp Goojrat to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing oval-framed "india" in red, "2" rate mark and, on reverse, London (24.4) and Durham (25.4) c.d.s.; wonderful content with amazing detailed reference to the battle of Chillianwallah where the British were victorious though in which the 61st. Regiment lost 114 officers and men either killed or wounded. Photo Estimate £ 300-400 Note: In 1848 two British political agents were murdered by Sikhs in Multan and as a consequence the Army of the Punjab was formed, to include the 61st. Regiment. The first encounter with the Sikh Army was at the battle of Chillianwallah. The Army of the Punjab left Chillianwallah on 14 February and reached Goorjat seven days later where the Sikh Army of the some 70-80 thousand men were drawn up in order of battle. Soon after the victory at the battle of Goojrat Britain annexed the Punjab
