India The First Sikh War, 1845-46 1847 (18 Mar.) entire letter "From No. 1999 Pte. Luke Byrne HM´s X Foot" at Lahore to Gibraltar, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and showing oval-framed "india" in red, "2" rate h.s. and boxed "to/pay" h.s. applied on arrival, the reverse showing oval-framed "lahore/free" d.s. and London transit c.d.s. (10.5). A most unusual destination. Photo Estimate £ 400-500 Note: Ranjit Singh ruled the Sikh State until his death in 1839, at which point a fight commenced as to his successor. With no State leadership the Sikh Army asserted it´´s power and crossed the border in to British territory on 11 December 1845. There followed British victorious battles at Moodkee and Ferozeshah. The 10th. Regiment arrived after these victories. It joined Sir Robert Dick´´s division before the battle of Sobraon which the British won though with heavy losses. The commander-in-Chief of the force, Sir Hugh Gough, reached Lahore, the Sikh capital, on 20 February 1846 where the regiment remained
