India The First Sikh War, 1845-46 1846 (15 Mar.) entire letter from Anne Brown in Derby "via Southampton and Bombay" to her brother "Corporal Gilbert Brown, No. 157 2 Troop 1st. Brigade Horse Artillary Hon. E. India Cos. Service, Umballah or elsewhere, India" and redirected to Loodianah, bearing 1841 1d. cancelled "242" and showing oval-framed "bombay/free" d.s. at left and manuscript "Dead" at right, the reverse with indistinct Umballa Free d.s. and arrival d.s. (15.3) in blue; upon finding that Corporal Brown was killed in the war, the cover was returned to England without re-directional charges and upon arrival in England placed in a printed Dead Letter Office "Returned paid Letter." wrapper addressed to his sister´s husband, as requested in the letter, with despatch c.d.s. (17.10) c.d.s. on face and arrival c.d.s. (18.10) on reverse. A most unusual pair. Photo Estimate £ 400-500
