Regt." at Yokohama to England, countersigned by the Commanding Officer and bearing 1864 CC 2c. brown cancelled "B62" in blue, the reverse with Hong Kong (10.5), March (11.7) and Charteres (12.7) c.d.s. A fine and rare soldiers cover. Photo Estimate £ 2,500-3,000 Note: In 1859 an Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Yedo was signed which permitted British citizens to reside and trade at five Japanese ports and for legations to be opened in them. One was opened at Kanagawa in 1859 but moved to Yokohama a year later. The Yokohama Packet Agency was established inside the British Consulate in 1859 and closed with the opening of a regular branch of the Hong Kong Post Office on 26 July 1867. It was under the control of G.P.O. London until 1868 when it´´s control was transferred to Hong Kong. A regular non-contract sailing between Yokohama, Shanghai and Hong Kong was established by the P&O in 1863. The contract service was not available until 1867. In 1863 murder of foreigners took place in the streets of Yokohama by armed retainers of the feudal noblemen, who governed the provinces of Japan and who opposed the Treaty and the opening up of Japan. As the Japanese authorities were unable to protect the British Legations, or the lives or property of British Citizens, the 2nd. Battalion H.M. 20th. Regiment was sent from India. It landed at Yokohama on 14 July 1864. The presence of the regiment calmed the situation. The above cover was carried from Yokohama by the P&O ship "Nepaul" on 28 April for Shanghai. Here it was transferred to the SS "Aden" for Hong Kong where the stamp was cancelled on 10 May
