A Great War Group of Three to Driver C.H. Pitters, Royal Field Artillery, Killed in Action, 1.11.1914 1914 Star, with copy Bar (72353 Dvr C.H. Pitters. R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medals (72353 Dvr. C.H. Pitters. R.A.), good very fine or better, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque ´Charles Henry Pitters´, with (2) Field Postcards of the 44th Brigade R.F.A.; enclosure slips for both the British War and Victory Medals, both addressed to the recipient´s mother, ´Mrs. C.E. Pitters, 13 Somerset Road, Old Portswood, Southampton´ and an enclosure slip for the forwarding of the recipient´s Princess Mary Christmas tin´, it appears much to the distress of the Mrs. Pitters that the tin was empty upon arrival to her, to which she penned the following, ´am I not entitled to the contents of it or shall I have to write to Her Royal Highness for it´. (Lot) Estimate £ 200-250 72353 Driver Charles Henry Pitters, born Camden Town, London, ´´he enlisted in March 1913 and at the outbreak of the War was immediately drafted to France. There he took part in many engagements, including the battle of Ypres, where he was killed in action November 1st 1914´´ (The National Roll of the Great War, refers); Pitters was serving with the 47th Battery 44th (Howitzer) Brigade Royal Field Artillery when he was killed; during the 1st battle of Ypres the 44th Brigade acted in support of the infantry Brigades attacking Zonnebeke; both the 44th and 60th Brigade acted in concert between 25th October - 5th November bringing their guns into action half a mile North East of Esterernes; the War Diary gives the following for 31st October - 1st November 1914, ´´heavy shelling all day from both sides. We shot a good deal by map and compass... shelled trenches in front of 6th Infantry Brigade and 4th Guards Brigade. Bivouacked in action. 1st November shelled trenches in front of 6th Infantry Brigade and 4th Guards Brigade. Fired at hostile batteries by map and compass. "Black Maria" into our own wagon line, Saddle Sergeant Crimer, Driver Pitters, Driver Rudge and Driver Woody killed´´; Pitters is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
