A Great War Group of Three to Sergeant H.E. Irons, Royal Artillery, Killed in Action, 24.4.1918 1914 Star, with Bar (35433 Gnr: H. Irons. R.H.A.); British War and Victory Medals, M.I.D. Oakleaves, this for wear on riband bar (35433 Sjt. H.E. Irons. R.A.), extremely fine, with Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque, ´Henry Evin Irons´, this in card box of issue with the following contemporary related documentation: - Parchment Memorial Scroll - M.I.D. Certificate, dated 7.11.1917; (2) Portrait photographs of recipient in uniform, one in the uniform of the Essex Regiment (lot) Estimate £ 220-260 M.I.D. London Gazette 14.12.1917 35433 Sergeant H.E. Irons R.F.A. 35433 Sergeant Henry Evin Irons, born Stratford, London; served during the Great War (prior to the outbreak of conflict served as no. 8177 Private 1st Battalion Essex Regiment) with "O" Battery Royal Horse Artillery in the French Theatre of War from 5.11.1914; on promotion to Sergeant Irons transferred to Royal Field Artillery, and was serving with "A" Battery 14th Brigade on the Western Front when he was killed in action, 24.4.1918, the 14th Brigade were serving at Villers Bretonneux during the German Spring Offensive of March/April 1918, and the Brigade´´s War Diary for 24.4.1918 gives the following, ´´3.45 enemy put down intense bombardment quantities of gas shells used.... 3 other ranks killed, 1 other rank wounded.... 5.45 enemy launched an attack with four Divisions and tanks... counter attack lauched by us... heavy fighting all night´´; Irons is buried in St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens, Somme.
