Great Britain Line-Engraved Issues Fraudulent or Unusual Usages of Line-Engraved Issues 1844 (7 Oct.) entire from Lancaster to Hawkshead bearing a fresh looking 1841 1d. but which clearly shows a faint black Maltese Cross underneath the "436" numeral, the adhesive affixed using red sealing wax. The stamp was accepted for postage and no one else appears to have noticed or identified the fraud. Very few covers are known and the vast majority of these come from evidence held by the courts or police a trial. - the ones that did slip through, such as this example, are of course much rarer. fine and very attractive.
