Murphy (M.M.), J., 23Bn., Machine Gun Corps (Cork). ´For services in Italy.´ 43017 Company Sergeant Major James John Murphy, M.M., M.S.M., born Cork, Ireland, 1892; enlisted as 9342 Private, Royal Munster Fusiliers, 5.3.1910; transferred to the 68th Company, Machine Gun Corps on its formation, 4.3.1916; discharged 21.1.1919, and re-enlisted in the Royal Munster Fusiliers. Company Sergeant Major Murphy´s Military Medal was probably awarded for the Battles of Menin Road Ridge, Polygon Wood, and Passchendaele, 1917. One of only 27 M.M. and M.S.M. pairs, and one of only 32 M.S.M.s for Italy, to the Machine Gun Corps.
