A Great War 1918 French Theatre M.M. Group of Four to Sergeant W. Williams, Machine Gun Corps, and Welsh Regiment, Wounded During the Defence of Gheluvelt Military Medal, G.V.R. (19374 Sjt. W. Williams. 1/M.G.C.); 1914 Star, with Bar (10883 Pte. W. Williams. 2/Welsh. R.); British War and Victory Medals (10883 Sjt. W. Williams. Welsh R.), nearly very fine, together with a photographic image of the recipient (4) Estimate £ 340-380 M.M. London Gazette 17.6.1919 19374 Sjt. Williams, W., 1st Bn., Machine Gun Corps (Cheltenham). 19374 Sergeant William Williams, M.M., born Cheltenham; served as 10883 Private, 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment, on the outbreak of War, and went to France 13.8.1914; took part and was wounded in the defence of Gheluvelt on the Menin Road, Ypres, 31.10.1914, the day selected by the Kaiser for his triumphant entry into Ypres, where the 130 survivors of two companies of the 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment, held their position against five fresh German Battalions- after the first hour the defenders totalled 45, 22 of them wounded, but still fighting; sent to hospital at Rouen; transferred as Corporal to 3 Company, Machine Gun Corps, 22.1.1916; transferred to 1st Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, on its formation, 28.2.1918; awarded the Military Medal, 8.11.1918, whilst with the Battalion at Levergies, near St. Quentin, Cambrai Sector, France.
