Alexander VII (Fabio Chigi, born 1599, Pope 1655-67), bronze medal by Gaspare Morone, 38mm., alexan vii pont max, bust right, wearing mozzetta and stole, signed on truncation, rev. da pacem domini in diebvs nostris, façade of S. Maria della Pace (Bartolotti E658 var.; Bonanni II, 647, 7; Lincoln 1151; Varriano pp.111-112, no.93; Venuti XV; Weber 407 var.), very fine contemporary striking, the obverse a little rubbed, yellowish brown patina Estimate £ 300-400 The annual medal of 1658 records the completion of the façade of S. Maria della Pace, started by the painter and architect Pietro da Cortona in 1656. The church became extremely popluar after the rebuilding, causing problems as access was originally through a narrow street. Many houses were therefore demolished in order in order to create a Piazza in front of the church.
