Alexander VII, bronze medal by Gaspare Morone, 39mm., bust left, wearing mozzetta, camauro and stole, signed on truncation, rev. the Palazzo del Quirinale (Facciata di Levante) (bonanni II, 641, 30; Martinori S75; Tocci/Worsdale 294; Varriano/Washington pp.256-7, fig.15; Venuti XXV; Weber Bauten Roms 220), extremely fine original striking, warm brown patina Estimate £ 400-600 This special medal of 1661 shows the façade of the Palazzo della Famiglia added by Alexander VII 1659-61 under the direction of Gian Lorenzo Bernini to the main block of the Quirinale. When finally extended and completed in the 18th century it became known as the ´Manica Lunga´ (the Long Sleeve) and housed members of the Papal court and family as well as members of the Swiss Guard. The Pope refers to this medal in his diary 8 September 1660 when Bernini appeared ´con disegno di medaglia per questa fabrica di Monte Cavallo´ and a few months later another entry records the medal´s completion on 29 January 1661.
