Clement IX (Giulio Rospigliosi, born 1600, Pope 1667-69), bronze medal by Charles Jean François Cheron, 96mm., clemens ix. pont. max. an. iii, bust right, wearing camauro, mozzetta and stole, signed on truncation, rev. aelio ponte exornato, view of the Ponte S. Angelo, Fame flying above, the river god Tiber and the wolf and twins reclining below (Bonanni II, 705, 14; Johnson 126; Lincoln 1281; Tocci/Worsdale 317; Varriano pp.130-131; Venuti XIV; Weber, Bautens Roms, 196), rich, softly shaded bronze cast, pierced at 12 o´clock Estimate £ 500-700 Cast in 1669 to celebrate the restoration of the Ponte Aelinus (the Hadrianic name of the Ponte S. Angelo), this is the first documented work by the young Cheron (1635-98). The medal shows clearly the statues of Saints Peter and Paul and the ten angels bearing symbols of the Passion on the new parapet of the bridge designed by Bernini. There was a close rapport between the young Cheron and Bernini and it has been suggested that the design of the portrait may depend on drawings also provided by Bernini (see A. Donni, ´Scultura e architettura del barocco su medaglie papali´ in Medaglia no.10 pp.6-26).
