Innocent X (Giambattista Pamfili, born 1574; Pope 1644-55), bronze medal by Johann Jakob Kornmann, 36mm., innocentvs x pont max anno v, bust left, wearing mozzette and camauro, rev. the capitoline Hill, aedificat et cvstodit in exergue (Bonanni II, 615, 25; Martinori s.38; Varriano/Washington p.257, fig.16; Weber Bauten Roms, 212), very fine cast medal, chocolate brown patina Estimate £ 300-400 Kornmann, called Cormano, born in Augsburg, moved to Venice c.1630 to learn wax modelling, and moved on to Rome where he set up as a medallist in competition against Morone and Mola, working for Popes Urban VIII and Innocent X. This medal of 1648 marks the work on the construction of the Palazzo Nuovo on the Piazza del Campidoglio, faithfully following the designs by Michangelo. The Roman equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, placed on a new pedestal by Michangelo, is also prominent on the medal.
