x CANADA Campaign, Expedition and Military Mail 1870 (Sept.) envelope from Roderick Mc.Farlane at Fort Chipewayan, on Lake Athabaska, routed through Fort Garry and Pembina, Dakota Territory, where it entered the U.S. mails, then via St. Paul and Chicago to Montreal, bearing U.S. 1869 3c. ultramarine pair with target cancellations and showing Pembina c.d.s. (30.9) at lower left, Montreal c.d.s. (13.10) on reverse. A very rare cover from the First Riel Rebellion. Photo Estimate £ 3,000-4,000 Note: No Canadian stamps were available at the end of the Riel Rebellion when Lt.-Governor Archibald´s troops occupied the Red River Territory on 24 August 1870. A postal service continued to be run by A.G.B. Bannatyne, Postmaster at Fort Garry. Canadian stamps became available on 10 December 1870, meanwhile local postage was free.
