x Gibraltar 1861 (12 Jan.) soldier´s entire "From Sgt. G.N. Gordon. 100th Royal Canadian. Gibraltar" to England, signed by the Commanding Officer and bearing G.B. 1d. Stars cancelled "A26", Gibraltar c.d.s. towards centre, Bristol arrival c.d.s. (19.1) on reverse; the contents including "... have got 65 distressed disbanded volunteers for Garibaldi left here by the steamer that was engaged to take them home". Photo Estimate £ 500-600 Note: The "100th Royal Canadian Regiment of Foot" was raised in the Richmond, Ont. district. The complement was 1027 men, many of whom were descendants of veterans of the 1812 war. Baron de Rottenburg was Adjutant-General of the Canadian Militia This is the first occasion on which a regiment was raised in Canada for service abroad, in the Imperial interest, as a British unit The regiment served on Garrison duty in Gibraltar
