Charles I, Salopia (Shrewsbury) mint (1644), Halfcrown, 14.11g., slender figure of king in ribbed armour, holding sword sloping backwards on horseback left, horse with prominent braided mane and wavy tail, no ground below, reads MAG BR FRAN ET HI RX (sic), rev. crowned oval garnished shield, with lion´s paws either side, CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO, annulet/escallop stops, three annulets after REGNO, m.m. lis on obverse only (JGB 1160-64A (same obv. die); Allen I-41; N.2605; S.3124) fine and clear, very rare Estimate £ 600-800PROVENANCE: P Hunt, portion of collection purchased privately by Colin Adams, March 2000 This is the only Halfcrown reverse die on which escallop stops appear. Allen knew of only one example, in the Ryan collection, lot 1317.
