Charles I, Worcester mint, Halfcrown, 14.30g., tall slender figure of king holding sword upright, on lean horse striding left, no ground below, reads MAG BRIT FRAN ET HIB, rev. crowned oval draped shield, double pellet/star stops, three pellets after REGNO, m.m. leopard´s head on obverse only (JGB 1157/1156 (same dies); Allen F-27 var.; N.2597; S.3106) a handsome example, lightly double struck on king´s head, otherwise well struck, on an unusually full round flan, very fine or better, very rare thus Estimate £ 1,800-2,000PROVENANCE: W L Raynes, Glendining, 15 February 1950, lot 526 Spink Auction 76, 24 May 1990, lot 82 Spink Auction 117, 19 November 1996, lot 366 The mintmark on Worcester obverse dies D, E, and F, thought by Allen, with reservations, to be a leopard´s head, is usually to small and indistinct to be positively identified. It is given in SCBI 33 as ´uncertain´. On this coin the mintmark, though not entirely clear, is much better struck up than usual and does appear to be a facing leopard or lion´s head. This reverse die was unpublished by Allen. It was noted by Vincent, BNJ XXVIII, p.169 and pl.XIII, 3.
