Charles I, Oxford mint, Halfcrown, 14.70g., 1644, Briot horseman walking left, rocky ground below, Oxford plume behind, rev. declaration, RELI.PRO.LE ANG.LIB.PA, two small Shrewsbury plumes and large central plume above, date and OX below, small Shrewsbury plumes either side of date, pellets either side of OX, double lozenge/single pellet stops, m.m. small Shrewsbury plume on obverse only (JGB 911 (this coin); Morr. G-20 var.; N.2427; S.2969) struck on a small thick flan, weak in parts of legend, otherwise fine, the reverse better, extremely rare Estimate £ 500-600PROVENANCE: Seaby Coin & Medal Bulletin, January 1971, no.J60 J G Brooker, SCBI 33, no.911 P Hunt, portion of collection purchased privately by Colin Adams, March 2000 This reverse die is very similar to Morr. 20, recorded from a coin in the British Museum collection. The only difference is that the BM piece has a stop after both LE and PA in the declaration. No other example of this variety has appeared on the market since 1960.
