Charles I, Nicholas Briot´s coinage, Halfcrown, 15.14g., hammered issue (1638-9), king in armour on ´Briot´s´ horse walking left, groundline below, reads MAG BRIT FR ET HIB, rev. heavily garnished square shield, lozenge stops, m.m. anchor (JGB 733 (this coin); N.2307; S.2861) light scratches on CA of CAROLVS, horseman in low relief, otherwise a neat round coin, very fine, extremely rare of this mintmark Estimate £ 1,200-1,500PROVENANCE: British Museum Duplicates G Hamilton-Smith, Glendining, 23 May, 1927, lot 306 R C Lockett, Glendining, 11 October 1956, lot 2353 R Carlyon-Britton, third collection purchased by Seaby, 1959 Dr E Burstal, Glendining, 15 May 1968, lot 350 J G Brooker, SCBI 33, no.733 Spink Numismatic Circular, May 1983, no.3037 Much of the obverse legend on this coin has been corrected in the die. It appears that the die sinker originally punched in CAOLVS, omitting the letter R, and did not notice the mistake until he had reached the 6 o´clock position. The whole of this portion of the legend has been overpunched commencing with R/O, O/L etc. The original legend may also have been amended for the last overpunched letter, R/A in BRIT does not otherwise fit the revised reading.
