Charles I, group IV, Halfcrown, 15.13g., Tower, type 4, fourth horseman, an artistic equestrian portrait, the tall figure of king in armour holding sword upright, cloak flying from shoulders, on an upright foreshortened horse, tail flowing between legs, walking left, reads MAG BRI FRA ET HI, rev. large oval garnished shield, m.m. star (over triangle on reverse) (cf. JGB 364; N.2214; S.2779) slightly weak on horse´s head, otherwise an unusually neat example of this type, centrally struck on a round flan, very fine, the overmark rare Estimate £ 250-300PROVENANCE: H W Morrieson, Sotheby, 20 November 1933, lot 476 E C Carter, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1950 J M Ashby, Spink Auction 145, 12 July 2000, lot 2065 Triangle is not known as a true group IV mintmark, this reverse is an overmarked die of group III, type 3a2 This fine equestrian portrait was also used on the group IV crowns, S.2761. On the larger denomination it is overwhelmed by the size of the field and, in combination with the lower relief obtainable when striking Crowns, seldom appears as handsome as on the Halfcrown.
