Charles I, group III, Halfcrown, 5.91g., struck on a Shilling flan, Tower under Parliament, type 3a3, , king in armour on horse walking left, of cruder workmanship, cloak flies from king´s shoulder, no ground below, reads MAG BRI FRA ET HIB, rev. oval garnished shield, m.m. small eye (JGB 361 (this coin); cf. N.2213; cf. S.2778) slightly off-centre on obverse, weak in parts, otherwise deeply toned, good fine, an extremely rare piece Estimate £ 800-1,000PROVENANCE: E W Rashleigh, Sotheby, 21 June 1909, lot 919 H Farquhar, Glendining, 25 April 1955, lot 46 J G Brooker, SCBI 33, no.361 This coin was catalogued in the Farquhar sale as ´an interesting and perhaps unique piece struck from the Halfcrown die but on a shilling flan´ Although it is on a flan of Shilling weight, the diameter is that of a Halfcrown, and this is clearly the intended denomination. The Manville collection contained the converse, the well known 1651 Commonwealth Shilling (ESC 428), struck from a Shilling obverse die, and a Halfcrown reverse die, on a flan of Shilling weight, Spink Auction 154, lot 11. The flan of the 1651 piece, of which there is a second example in the British Museum, is of normal Shilling diameter. It was therefore intended for a Shilling, but struck from a Halfcrown reverse die in error.
