A Victorian Staff Officer´s Sword c. 1845-57 A fine and interesting sword of a staff officer of the Royal Engineers, with 321/2 in. (82.5cm) slightly-curved fullered blade by pillin of Soho, extensively etched with foliate decoration, VR cypher, Gun, mottoes ubique and quo fas et gloria ducunt, Thunderbolt and royal engineers in addition to a family crest with motto virtus in ardua and initials ? JCP, the guard, retaining almost all original gilding, with crossed sword and baton within a laurel wreath in the cartouche, and wire-bound fishskin grip, a field officer´s brass scabbard. Estimate £ 250-350According to regulations, officers of the Royal Engineers wore swords with the Royal Cypher in the guard, as for infantry. In 1857 they adopted their own pattern sword with a "honeysuckle" guard.
