Crime and Punishment Punishment Transportation 1838-40, entire letters (2), letter drafts (2) and large ´Indemnity´ document relating to John Barber, a transportee in Van Diemen´s Land, the contents refer to his claim for a share of his grandfather´s legacy. The submission was made by a friend of the family, Henry Meredith in Birmingham, who gives Barber good reference ´he has married the Daughter of the Chief Overseer…. by whom he has two fine children, and that he is very steady & well conducted & long since emancipated…´: in certain instances a convicted criminal could be denied his inheritance whilst under sentence, this type of testimony to his current status and good character would have been essential – in this case it was successful and Barber received the sum of eighty-five pounds and seven shillings.
