Crime and Punishment Punishment Transportation 1793 (24 Apr.) entire letter to Bridgwater, Somerset, written by the Superintendent of the prison hulk ´Lion´ in Portsmouth harbour – the content relates to James Every (a.k.a. Aubrey) who had been sentenced to seven years transportation but served his time on various hulks moored off the British coast; some strengthened splits though still attractive. Also the front page of the ´London Gazette´ dated 1 May 1792 with a reference to Spence Broughton who had been sentenced to death for highway robbery – a copy of the York Assizes record book shows that the judge had originally decreed that he should be hung in chains on a gibbet in a public place until dead, his co-accused was more fortunate as he escaped from prison Estimate £ 200-250
