Crime and Punishment Punishment Transportation 1791 (21 Jan.) entire letter from Snatewell to the Secretary of State´s Office in London, the address panel with light strikes of black ´new/market´ and red circular ´fleuron´ type ´free/a´, the letter refers to William Brown, sentenced to seven years transportation for larceny in 1788, Brown´s name later appears on the Muster Roll of the N.S.W. Regiment after having enlisted on Norfolk Island (the regiment was also known as the ´Rum Corps´ – they were notoriously brutal and many of the men recruited were the most serious types of offenders); vertical folds not detracting. Nine vessels made up the 1788 ´Third Fleet´ convict transport to Botany Bay, a total of 1860 prisoners were carried and of these 182 died en-route.. Photo Estimate £ 200-250
