Crime and Punishment Prisons London King´s Bench: 1773, 1787 and 1830 entire letters from/relating to prisoners at King´s Bench, fascinating content including ´I know not what to do…. I have been destitute…. and my friends appear to have deserted me´, another stating ´she was turned out of her room…. and now even lays on the floor´ adding that even ´her Cloaths are pledged´, the 1787 letter (apparently from an M.P. or Lord) complains that a ´foreman´ (probably a debtor prisoner) employed to mend pavements in Tewkesbury had absconded - seemingly because he had not been paid ´his Groat´ – and appeals for the employment of ´a man to be depended upon to pay a prisoner his groat regularly´; a most appealing trio Estimate £ 250-300
