London Gazette 3.8.1944 No. 2310049 Lance Corporal Henry Richard Walden, Royal Corps of Signals (London, N.13) The Recommendation states ´This NCO was in charge of the line maintenance detachment at Villa Signal Centre from 26 Mar 44 to 2 Apr 44 when he was evacuated to M.D.S. This detachment was responsible for the maintenance of Divisional line communications in the Villa area including the lines from Divisional HQ to 11 and 38 Brigades. The lines both to Brigades and Division were under observation and constant shell fire but this NCO by his personal example ensured that communications when disrupted were restored with the minimum delay. On several occasions he went out to repair lines during periods of accurate shelling and carried out the repairs with the utmost calm and efficiency. At 11.15hrs on 2 Apr the enemy brought accurate fire to bear on the building in which the Signal Centre was housed. On four occasions lines leading into the Signal centre were hit. L./Cpl. Walden immediately left the shelter of the building and repaired the damaged lines. At about 12.30hrs the building itself was hit by a shell which caused part of the wall to fall on the occupants of a room. L./Cpl. Walden who was at the time in this room forced his way out of the debris and although himself wounded in the leg did all that he could to assist the other occupants of the room, insisting that they should be attended to before he would have his wound dressed. This NCO´s conduct throughout was of the highest order and his continual cheerfulness and endurance while working for long periods under difficult conditions was a constant source of encouragement to the men under his command.´
