London Gazette 1.3.1945 No. 2576547 Signalman John Dand, Royal Corps of Signals (Kirkcaldy) The Recommendation states ´During the Bde attack over the Wessem Canal on the night 14/15 Nov, Sigm. Dand was detailed to establish line communications between Bde HQ and the leading battalion. Up to the time the Bn Tac HQ crossed the canal, he was busy laying and repairing the line as far as the canal bank, where he worked in a mined area under constant shell and mortar fire. When Bn Tac HQ crossed the canal, the rear link wireless set was damaged and it was vitally necessary to establish the line comm. Sigm. Dand realised the situation and carried out the difficult task of crossing the canal and extending the line on his own. He worked his way forward single handed to the Bn HQ and installed the required communication. Though ill, he continued until conditions became static. When relieved, he collapsed from exhaustion and was evacuated to hospital. Throughout the operation, he showed exceptional initiative, resource and cool courage totally regardless of his personal safety.´ Dand was convicted of a capital offence in 1951, and subsequently executed that year.
