A Diorama of the Action at Rorke's Drift A large and extremely detailed model, containing over 200 figures (52mm scale), depicting the battle in the evening of the 22nd January 1879, with the Zulu attack still in progress, considerable casualties to the 24th Foot, and the roofs of the buildings on fire, all on two adjoining boards each 24 in. x 36 in., and with purpose-built tables with provision for electric light inside the hospital building Estimate £ 2,500-3,500 Note: The Battle of Rorke's Drift is one of the most emotive actions in British military history. Approximately 4000 Zulus, under command of Prince Dabulamanzi kaMpande were opposed by 95 men of B Company 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment, armed with Martini Henry breech-loading rifles, who had fortified a small house and adjacent chapel. The battle began in the late afternoon and continued for twelve hours, as the Zulus made repeated attacks and the defenders were forced from the house into the area of the chapel. British casualties were fifteen dead and two who later died of their wounds. The Zulus are estimated to have lost 600 men. The award of eleven VCs for this action, more than for any other single battle, probably reflected the fact that it was felt to have redeemed the honour of the British Army after the debacle of Isandlwana, as much as the gallantry and determination of the participants. This model was constructed by the vendor's father between 1972 and 1977, and in 1979 was awarded a commendation at the Wembley Model Engineering Exhibition. Spink regret that in view of the size of this model, collection will be the responsibility of the purchaser.
