Germany. The H.M.S. Ark Royal. Satirical Medal, 1939. Iron, 71mm. By Guido Goetz. Cast by Karl and Guido Goetz, Munich. A pensive Churchill, cigar in mouth, seated at a table with Chamberlain at the center flanked on the other side by Secretary of State for War Leslie Hore-Belisha incongruously clad in military uniform; Churchill's hand supports a paper inscribed in German: "German bomber against British naval forces, September 27, 1939; incuse crowned anchor W-CH below Churchill, Star of David LHB below Hore-Belisha; "How do I tell my people?", rev. Skeletal figure of Death holding a Union Jack inscribed ARK ROYAL in the waves of an explosion-filled sea, German bomber overhead. In the first action in history of men-of-war at sea and a large aerial bombing force, the British naval squadron which included the aircraft carrier H.M.S. "Ark Royal" was attacked 150 miles off the coast of Norway by 20 German bombers. Although there were no Royal Navy losses from the engagement, the Nazis claimed that the "Ark Royal" had been sunk and a battleship badly damaged. Engstrom 5b. Only 100 pieces cast. Uncirculated.
