Germany. Churchill and the Sinking of the H.M.S. Courageous. Satirical Medal, 1939. Iron, 70.2mm. By Guido Goetz. Cast by Karl and Guido Goetz, Munich. Neptune rising from the sea, holding the sunken aircraft carrier Courageous on his shoulder; RULE BRITANNIA, rev. The cloaked skeletal figure of Death emerging from the sea right, holding a sheet of paper headed by a large incuse swastika inscribed in German "Torpedoed by a German U-boat, September 18, 1939"; "Job's Message of Bad News to Churchill" around. The sinking of the aircraft carrier H.M.S. "Courageous" by a German U-boat on September 17th was the Royal Navy's first major loss of Second World War (erroneously stated as September 18 on the medal). Engstrom 4b. Only 100 pieces cast.
