Auction: 390 - Renaissance Plaquettes and Commemorative Medals featuring the Neil A. Goodman Collection - e-Auction
Lot: 133
ITALY, Emilia-Romagna (?), third quarter of the 16th Century
The Deposition. Rectangular plaquette. Bronze, 76 x 107mm. The Virgin weeps before the dead body of Christ, a woman beside her; Mary Magdalene kneeling left holds Christ's hand, a bearded man cradles his back; a young man at the right raises his hands in grief, cross behind. This composition exists in two other recorded specimens: a worn gilt example with arched top at the British Museum and another once in the collection of Florentine dealer Stefano Bardini (sold in New York, 1918, lot 221). In his catalog of the plaquettes in the Ashmolean Warren associates the piece with Giovanni Battista Scultori (No. 348, pp 892-4), but the mannered elegance and low relief of this specimen differs considerably. Slightly ragged left edge. An Extremely Fine old cast. Ex Schwab Mannheim, Art and Antiquities Auction (Germany), April 23, 2016, lot 550229.
