NORTHERN ITALIAN (Late 15th-16th Century)
Nimbate Bust of Christ. Rectangular plaquette. Gilt Bronze, 68 x 94mm. Cast with integral suspension mount (102mm). Bust of Christ left with a cruciform nimbus, Dove of the Holy Spirit above, radiant sunface upper left, crescent moonface upper right; on a scroll below. INRI. (Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudeorum - "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" - originally the mocking Superscription on the cross as recounted in Matthew 27:37, Mark 15:26 and Luke 23:38). Cf. NGA 277 (I.N.R.I. across field). Extremely Fine. Inventory tag on back. Ex Domenico Castelletti Collection. Podestà of Varese (1926 to his death 1944). Castelletti ignominiously was connected to the arrest of Calogero Marrone (1889-1945 Dachau), chief of the Varese Civil Register office, who helped Jews and anti-fascists escape from the Nazis.
