The Death of Hippolytus (The Fall of Phaeton). Round plaquette, ca. 1500-1505. Bronze, 113mm. Plain ground variant. Naked youth falling backwards from a broken chariot drawn by four plunging horses, no hillocks or trees in background. cf. Wixom, Cleveland 47. Pierced. A Very Fine old cast. A variant with more background detailing including trees and hillocks on a 106mm. flan and described as 'contemporary' realized $52,000 in November 2020.
