GALEAZZO MONDELLA called Il MODERNO (1467-1528)
Saint Sebastian. Rectangular plaquette. Gilt Bronze, 56 x 77mm. The Saint, pierced by three arrows, tied to a Corinthian column; at left a pier decorated with the figure of Venus and two horsemen, at right, a pier broken on top, adorned with the figure of Mars and an eagle. Bange 433. Bargello 105; London, British Museum (2 examples); Maclagan, pp. 29-30; Naples 32; Oxford Ashmolean 71; Paris, Louvre, 305; Planiscig 351; Ricci ii, pp. 138, 177; Pope-Hennessy 154. cf. Spink Sale 193 (London), January 24, 2009, lot 26 [not gilt]. There are no signed versions of this plaquette known; the attribution is based on similarities with signed works. A possible source for the composition is given to us by Planiscig, who identified a relief of St Sebastian by Caradosso, described by Ambrogio di Leone in his dialogue De Nobilitate Rerum published in Venice in 1525.
Pierced; with label "274" and red ink "6" on back. An Extremely Fine cast, with much residual gilding. Ex Luc Smolderen, Künker Sale 282, September 28, 2016, lot 4846 (part).
