GALEAZZO MONDELLA called Il MODERNO (1467-1528)
The Crucifixion. Rectangular plaque, ca. 1485-1489. Bronze, 90 x 127mm. At center, the crucified Christ, Mary Magdalene clinging to the bottom of the cross; the crucified thieves hang at either side; at left, the Virgin supported by the Holy Women, a small child and St. John near them grieving; three soldiers at right bearing shields; a centurion at the side of the cross, another mounted soldier in the background breaking the limbs of one of the thieves with a club. Bange 454; Kress 147. Pope-Henessy NGA 147. Pierced, old ink collection number 15068 E10/E00 on back. A Good Very Fine early cast.
