THE MEDALLIST G.T. (ca. 1475-1495)
Giovanni Mocenigo (1409-1485), Doge of Venice, 1478. Medal. Uniface. Bronze, 77mm. IONNES MOCENIGO DVX, bust left wearing gown and ducal cap. Hill 436: Armand I, 57, 4. Mocenigo battled the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II at sea and Ercole I d'Este Duke of Ferrara on land. The long war with the Sublime Porte ended in a Venetian defeat with the Treaty of Constantinople in 1479, but Venice emerged victorious in 1484 over Ferrara, recapturing Rovigo and the Polesine. A modern, but well-done cast on a reduced flan lacking a border and the GTF signature below the truncation, stamped on the edge: P.P.B.Co MUNCHEN GERMANY.
